Sama

Image, video, and other annotated data for AI development.

Overview

Sama provides human-verified annotation, validation, and model evaluation. Its public offering spans computer vision, language, multimodal data, and sensor-oriented work, combining automation with human review. The company positions its services around the data operations needed to build and maintain production models.

The three named service areas serve different purposes. Annotation adds labels or structure; validation checks existing material; evaluation assesses model behavior. A project may require one or several of these stages, but the outputs and acceptance criteria should remain distinct.

Sama's directory role is a data-services provider, particularly for visual and multimodal material. Published acceptance-rate and quality claims are company-reported and do not establish performance for every task. The actual labeling instructions, reviewer expertise, and difficult-case coverage are more useful for assessing a proposed engagement.

Why validation deserves attention

Our assessment is that the hardest records often determine whether a model works outside a clean demonstration. In an illustrative video task, an object may be partially hidden, briefly leave the frame, or change appearance under different lighting. Consistent handling of those cases is more informative than a high average accuracy on obvious examples.

Validation can reveal whether an existing collection has systematic problems, such as inconsistent boundaries or missing categories. It can also help distinguish a model weakness from an error in the reference labels. That distinction matters before commissioning more data or interpreting an evaluation score.

Evaluating fit

Request examples from the relevant modality, including ambiguous, rejected, and corrected records. Agree on annotation conventions and how uncertainty should be represented. Ask how reviewers are calibrated and how changes to guidance propagate through the dataset. A pilot should measure quality by scenario or class, not only across the whole batch. For model evaluation, inspect the evidence and criteria behind judgments. Clarify what the buyer supplies, what Sama produces, and how revisions are handled. Compare the cost of accepted, usable data after review and integration. The strongest outcome is a collection that addresses specific model failures and can be maintained consistently as new data and edge cases arrive.
